The AAP has won the elections to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD election), dislodging the BJP from power after 15 years. The Arvind Kejriwal-led party has won 135 seats, well past the halfway mark in the 250-member civic body, as against the BJP’s 97. Congress has won from six wards. Votes are still being counted.
Elections to the 250 wards in the national capital were held on December 4. A total of 1,349 candidates contested the elections, the first since three civic bodies were unified earlier this year. In 2017, BJP had won 181 of the (then) 270 municipal wards while AAP could secure only 48 and Congress finished third with 30.

The AAP has secured victory in 129 wards so far as against the BJP’s 96. The halfway mark in the 250-ward Municipal Corporation of Delhi is 125. Congress has won six wards while three Independents too have secured victory. Votes are still being counted.

The BJP has won 94 seats so far and the counting of votes is still on. Congress is at a distant third with six seats. Three Independent candidates have also won.

Delhi BJP chief Adesh Gupta says the people of Delhi will take “revenge” for Arvind Kejriwal’s corruption and betrayal. The BJP will come to power for the fourth time, he says. “The people of Delhi will take revenge for the manner in which the Delhi Chief Minister indulged in corruption and betrayed them. I trust the people of Delhi. We raised issues, exposed AAP’s corruption, and revealed their failures. We’re going to come to power in MCD, for the fourth time,” says Mr Gupta.

Municipal Election Results: AAP Meet On As Early Trends Differ From Exit Polls
AAP leaders went into a huddle as the counting threw up a tight contest, much different from the AAP sweep predicted by exit polls. Manish Sisodia and Raghav Chadha rushed to Delhi Chief Minister and AAP boss Arvind Kejriwal’s residence. They were joined by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
The AAP is leading in 132 wards, just ahead of the BJP which is leading in 104 wards. The Congress is ahead in 10 seats, latest data shows.
AAP leader and the lone transgender candidate in the contest for MCD polls, Bobi, today won from the Sultanpuri-A ward, according to the State Election Commission. She is the first member from the transgender candidate to be elected to the MCD. Bobi defeated Congress candidate Varuna Dhaka by a margin of 6,714 votes. After being chosen to represent the party, Bobi had said she wants to beautify her constituency and improve the lives of her neighbours. She had said that she would work to weed out corruption from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).

Both the AAP and the BJP fielded 250 candidates, while the Congress has 247 in the contest. Besides, 382 Independents are contesting as well. Among other parties, Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party contested 132 wards, the NCP 26, and the Janata Dal (United) on 22.
Election Result: Exit Polls Will Be Proven Wrong, Says BJP
Ahead of the counting of votes for the MCD polls, the BJP has exuded hope that the tide will turn in its favour. The exit polls showed that the AAP was going to sweep the MCD polls. “We have hope that the results will prove the exit polls wrong and the BJP will return back to rule the MCD,” said Delhi BJP general secretary Dinesh Pratap Singh. Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor said it would be too early to give in to the survey predictions.
