The results for the Gujarat assembly elections will be declared today. The counting of votes is underway. The BJP has a big lead over Congress while AAP is far behind the two parties, shows the latest trends. The elections to the 182-member assembly were held on December 1 and 5.
The BJP is eyeing a seventh straight term in Gujarat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state, while the Congress hopes to remain the main Opposition party. Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP is seeking to emerge as the main challenger to the BJP in the state. Exit polls have predicted a landslide victory for the BJP, but such predictions often go wrong. In 2017, BJP had won 99 seats and Congress 77.

“We knew from before that BJP will break all records. There was no anti-incumbency. The people trust Modi ji.”
Rajnath Singh, Defence Minister

The BJP is leading in 156 seats while the Congress is ahead in 18. The AAP, which has made inroads into the Prime Minister’s home state, is leading in six seats.
“It’s (PM) Modi Ji’s hard work,” said Kailash Vijayvargiya, BJP National General Secretary, when asked whether AAP has eaten into Congress votes to hand over a bigger victory to the BJP. On whether the Gujarat victory will act as a plank for 2024, he said every election has different issues. “In Himachal, we will cross 40,” he added.
The BJP is leading in 152 seats of the total 182 seats in the Gujarat assembly. The Congress is leading in 21 seats while the AAP is ahead in seven seats.

“Our leader, PM Modi, was right there at the front, leading in Gujarat while Rahul Gandhi had fled the battlefield. We are very confident that the people of Gujarat will make this victory bigger than that of 2002. Our confidence is based on the people, not on the fact that Congress votes will be eaten away by the AAP.”
Zafar Islam, BJP spokesperson
The BJP is leading in 138 seats while the Congress is ahead in 33 seats. The AAP is ahead in nine seats while other candidates are leading in the remaining two seats.

“Early leads are showing that BJP is all set to better its best performance in Gujarat. The much-hyped third angle of AAP is not the player that it was made out to be. The AAP is eating into Congress votes. For the better part of the BJP in power in Gujarat PM Modi was the Chief Minister, hence why should we not be fronting Gujarat even now? As per the leads, we are doing well even in Himachal too. The media, which predicted a close contest, will be proven wrong. We fight hard for elections and we also celebrate big, so there will be celebrations in the evening.”
Neha Joshi, BJP spokesperson
