“We did play India well in the recent series, we were able to put together complete performances and that’s something we’ve been speaking about for a while. It’s now about replicating it today. Same team for us,” says New Zealand skipper Sophie Devine.

“Looks a good wicket and later on, there could be dew which will make batting easier. Also we depend a lot on spinners, so better to bowl first. One change – Yastika replaces Shafali at the top,” says Mithali.

Mithali Raj has won the toss and elected to bowl against New Zealand in Hamilton

When the two sides last met in the 2017 World Cup, India recorded a crushing 186-run win over New Zealand. Mithali scored 109 runs off 123 balls, while Harmanpreet scored 60 runs off 90 deliveries. Veda Krishnamurthy also chipped in with a quick-fire 70 before the bowlers bundled out New Zealand for just 79.

New Zealand captain Sophie Devine has been in phenomenal form, scoring centuries against Australia and West Indies. Amelia Kerr has got scores of 92* and 47* in her last three games and she will look to continue the run.

India were 114 for six at one point against Pakistan. But Pooja Vastrakar (67) and Sneh Rana, who made an unbeaten 53, boosted the innings to help India put up a challenging 244 for seven on the scoreboard. Skipper Mithali had said that her team has “a lot of things to work on” and India will be hoping for an improved batting show today.

Let’s hope we get a cracking contest here. This could very well turn into a lop-sided game if either team loses wickets in a flurry. But the pitch at Seddon Park is known for offering help to batters. Expect a hefty total folks.

While India started their campaign with a clinical win over Pakistan, New Zealand suffered a shocking three-run loss to the West Indies. But the hosts retaliated with a nine-wicket thrashing of Bangladesh. Both India and New Zealand are set to go for their second straight win of the tournament. Toss and teams will be up shortly.

New Zealand may have trumped India Women 4-1 in the recent ODI series but Amy Satterthwaite sees this fixture as a one-off affair. New Zealand would look to use information from the ODIs to their benefit.

“But we know that it’s obviously a one-off match in the World Cup cricket — and the series will mean nothing if you bat for zero. So, we will use that information to our benefit where we can and then outside of that,” she said in the pre-match presser.

“I’m not aware of how many wickets I have, but it is important, as a senior member of the side, to go there and perform well, give a good start, give an early breakthrough. That is my job and I want to stick to my role, that is the important thing and if you play a long time, you are going to achieve a few individual milestones,” Jhulan told the media on Wednesday.

She picked two wickets in the opening fixture against Pakistan and Jhulan Goswami is on the cusp of making history. She is set to become the leading wicket-taker in the Women’s Cricket World Cups. Jhulan is now just two wickets away from overtaking the 39 wickets taken by Lyn Fullston of Australia from 1982 to 1988.

Mithali herself will look to be among the runs, having scored a sluggish 36-ball nine against Pakistan. Harmanpreet Kaur also failed to get going and perished after scoring five off 14 deliveries.

Shafali has got the backing of senior pacer Jhulan Goswami, who said every player goes through such patches.

“Shafali has already proved herself. She is a very exciting cricketer. But these things happen with every cricketer.”

In her last seven games, Shafali Verma has managed to score just one fifty and six lowly scores. Her return to form will be a crucial element in India’s win.

A much-improved batting show will be expected from the Indians and Shafali Verma will also look to elevate her performance. In the recent ODI series, the Indian bowling attack failed as well. They were unable defend totals of 270 and 280 against a formidable New Zealand unit. Can they turn the tables?
