Coronavirus Cases in India: The recovery rate is 96.12 per cent.

India added 19,079 coronavirus infections in the past 24 hours, placing its overall number at 1.03 crore cases, the Health Ministry’s data showed. The number of fresh infections is 5 per cent lower than on Friday. In this period, India reported 224 deaths linked to the virus, taking the total number of fatalities to 1,49,218.
Meanwhile, a dry run to check the best way to vaccinate people against COVID-19 and plug loopholes in logistics and training will be held in all the states today. This drive will also test the operational feasibility in the use of CoWIN application in a field environment. Short for Covid Vaccine Intelligence Network, CoWIN is a digital platform to roll out and scale up the vaccination drive.
The massive exercise comes a day after a panel of government-appointed experts recommended approval for the Oxford COVID-19 vaccine, manufactured by Serum Institute of India, to the regulator Drugs Control Authority of India.

All passengers coming from the UK between January 8 and January 30 would be mandatorily subjected to self-paid RT-PCR tests on arrival at the Indian airports concerned, the health ministry said in a standard operating procedure (SOP) issued on Saturday.
All the passengers coming from the UK during the intervening period from January 8 to 30, 2021 shall be subjected to self-paid RT-PCR tests on arrival at the Indian airports concerned (port of entry).
All passengers should submit self-declaration form on the online portal (www.newdelhiairport.in) at least 72 hours before the scheduled travel.
All the passengers arriving from the UK should be carrying a negative RT-PCR Test report for which test should be conducted within 72 hours prior to undertaking the journey. The same also shall be uploaded on the online portal (www.newdelhiairport.in).
The UK government has instructed all primary schools in London to remain closed and not return for the new term on Monday amid a surge in COVID-19 infections rates across England.
After an urgent review, the Department for Education (DfE) decided that the “education contingency framework” will be applicable across all of the UK capital instead of just a few boroughs.
“As infection rates rise across the country, and particularly in London, we must make this move to protect our country and the NHS. We will continue to keep the list of local authorities under review, and reopen classrooms as soon as we possibly can,” said UK Education Secretary Gavin Williamson.
From Monday, London primary schools will be required to provide remote learning to all children but vulnerable and critical worker children who will continue to attend school.
Tamil Nadu on Saturday conducted a dry run at 17 centres for the rollout of COVID-19 vaccination that showed successful working of the processes involved and it was a learning experience as well, a top state health official said on Saturday.
The exercise showed that all preparations were in “ready” mode for the roll-out of the COVID-19 vaccine in the state, Tamil Nadu Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan said, adding that overall, the processes worked successfully.
The dry run was held at three centres each in the districts of Chennai, Tiruvallur, Nilgiris, Tirunelveli and five in Coimbatore. “An initial learning was that the room earmarked for vaccination should be more spacious,” the secretary told reporters, adding officials from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) also witnessed the drive.
Arunachal Pradesh did not record a single fresh COVID-19 case in the last 24 hours, a health department official said on Saturday.
The state’s coronavirus tally remained at 16,719, he said.
Two more people were cured of the infection on Friday, taking the total number of recoveries in the state to 16,566, State Surveillance Officer (SSO) Dr Lobsang Jampa said.
The COVID-19 recovery rate in the state is 99.08 per cent, the SSO said.
Arunachal Pradesh now has 97 active coronavirus cases, while 56 people have succumbed to the infection so far he said, adding that the fatality ratio is 0.33 per cent.

In order to prepare the medical staff and infrastructure, the dry run for the COVID-19 vaccine will continue regularly across Assam till actual vaccination takes place, a senior official said on Saturday.
Talking to PTI, National Health Mission (NHM) Mission Director Lakshmanan S said the Health Department does not want to leave any stone unturned to find out any lacuna in the system before administering the vaccine to the people of the state.
“Today, we are having the dry run at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital, Sonapur Civil Hospital and Khanapara State Dispensary. This is going to be a continuous process and we will be having dry runs till the actual vaccine comes to us,” he added.
A dry run for COVID-19 vaccination is underway at three centres in West Bengal with at least 75 health workers participating in the programme on Saturday, an official said.
The exercise started at 9 am at Urban Primary Health Centres in Duttabad and Madhyagram and Amdanga Rural Hospital in North 24 Parganas district, he said.
“At least 75 people are participating in the programme at three centres. They have been asked to register their names for the vaccination mock drill. Their health condition will be observed for at least 30 minutes after completion of the exercise,” the official said.
The dry run was part of the nationwide exercise to test the preparedness of the authorities before launching of the actual vaccination programme.

Pfizer Inc and its partner BioNTech Se plan to give volunteers who received a placebo in its COVID-19 vaccine trial an option to receive a first dose of the vaccine by March 1, 2021, while staying within the study.
The trial’s Vaccine Transition Option allows all participants aged 16 or older the choice to discover whether they were given the placebo, “and for participants who learn they received the placebo, to have the option to receive the investigational vaccine while staying in the study,” the companies said on their website for trial participants.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and a panel of its outside advisers have expressed concerns over Pfizer’s “unblinding” plan, saying it could make it harder to continue collecting data on safety and effectiveness needed to win full FDA approval of the vaccine.

The Oxford COVID-19 vaccine manufactured by the Serum Institute of India will be sent for approval to the regulator Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) by a government-appointed panel of experts.
The Serum Institute of India (SII) is making the vaccine Covishield developed by Oxford University and pharma major AstraZeneca, while Bharat Biotech has partnered with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) for its Covaxin.
Pfizer had sought more time to present their data to the panel of experts.
The centre is looking to start giving vaccine shots from this month, once the vaccine is cleared for a final time by the DCGI.
A dry run for vaccination is scheduled in all the states today.
About two million doses of COVID-19 vaccine developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca are set to be supplied every week by the middle of January in the United Kingdom, The Times reported.
AstraZeneca expects to supply two million doses of the vaccine in total by next week, the newspaper reported, citing an unnamed member of the Oxford-AstraZeneca team. “The plan is then to build it up fairly rapidly – by the third week of January we should get to two million a week,” the report added.
The company was not immediately available to respond to a Reuters request for comment.
The report comes after Britain on Wednesday approved the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, hoping that rapid action will help it stem a record surge of infections driven by a highly contagious form of the virus.

Efforts are on to trace 75 people who have travelled to Karnataka from the UK with authorities hopeful of locating them soon, state Health Minister K Sudhakar said on Friday.
The number of returnees from the UK who have tested positive for the new strain of coronavirus prevalent in the European nation remained at seven and results of genomic sequencing of 31 others was awaited, he told reporters here.
“We are yet to trace 75 people who travelled from the UK… some foreign nationals are also there who might not have local contact numbers, their details have been collected from immigration department,” Mr Sudhakar said.
The French government on Friday announced it is bringing forward its nighttime curfew by two hours in 15 regions to help combat the coronavirus, as infections remain high.
The 15 of France’s 101 departments affected by the switch from Saturday, to a curfew beginning at 6:00 pm rather than 8:00 pm, include the Les Alpes-Maritimes department where the Mediterranean city of Nice is located.
The other areas are concentrated in the east of the country.
Paris has, for now, been spared the additional restriction.
“The virus is continuing to spread in France… but with a disparity between regions,” said government spokesman Gabriel Attal as he announced the move.
“If the situation were to deteriorate further in certain areas, we will take the necessary decisions,” he told TF1 broadcaster.
Britain reactivated emergency hospitals built at the start of the pandemic and shut primary schools in London on Friday to counter the rapid spread of a much more infectious variant of the coronavirus.
With more than 50,000 new daily cases of COVID-19 for the last four days, the health service said it was preparing for an anticipated rush of patients and needed more beds.
The announcement comes just days after the Royal London Hospital told staff in an email it was now in “disaster medicine mode” and unable to provide high standard critical care.
